A minimally invasive procedure that mechanically releases the tissue bands beneath a depressed scar.
Subcision uses a needle or cannula inserted beneath the skin to break the fibrous bands that tether a scar to the tissue below, allowing the depressed area to lift. Although it involves no open incision, it is a minimally invasive procedure, as the skin is punctured by the instrument. The controlled injury also stimulates new collagen formation, which can further improve the area’s appearance over time.
