Lumenis® FDA-approved uses a range of wavelength energy 500nm to 1200nm to treat benign blood vessels, pigmented lesions, and hair removal. This treatment improves the appearance of the skin (e.g. redness, acne scars, uneven skin color, and rosacea).  The light wavelength, exposure duration, and energy level are chosen to selectively damage targeted chromophores in the skin such as oxy-hemoglobin and pigmented cells with minimum damage to the surrounding tissue.  Some energy will be absorbed by the water inside the skin, stimulating the growth of collagen and elastin.

During the treatment, the device will emit intense pulsed light that penetrates the depth of skin to match the position of superficial pigments.  The pigment will be destroyed by the energy and the pulsed light. As the pigmented tissues may not be destroyed totally with one single treatment, further treatments may be necessary.

Blood vessels that have undergone the intense pulsed light treatment will constrict. Skin cells undergone intense pulsed light treatment will increase collagen and elastin production, reconstructing the skin layer.

It should be noted that related risks should be clearly understood before the treatment. If there is any problem before or after the procedures, consultation with the attending medical practitioner is necessary.
